I came to Blacksburg in September of 1970 as a student, a freshman. At the time, the computer science department didn't exist. It was a minor in math, I wasn't a math a major type person, and so I came in as a chemical engineer student. And so that's what brought me down to Tech, at the time, it was the engineering school in Virginia. And I grew up in Northern Virginia in Falls Church, and probably 20 some people from my high school class, we all came down here to Virginia Tech and there's probably the same amount of people that went to UVA. So it was kind of like, oh, you're going to Tech, I'm going to Tech and that type of thing. And then in 1972, that's when I switched over to computer science. It had become a major at that point, and in fact, that was its first year. George Gorsline was the first department head. His office was located in the old security building up here by the power plant. That's where his office was, up on the second floor. And and I found out about him because I was working part time over in Squires. My job in Squires was to fill up the vending machines. The funny thing about it was the minimum wage at that time was a buck 85 an hour. And some of the guys that I lived near in the dorms, they were working as programmers for various departments, and they were getting paid 4 bucks an hour. And I was like, whoa, how can I get into that? Well, you got to be in computer science, and so that's when I started thinking about it. And then I said, well, I'll switch over.
