“I am delighted to return and serve at my alma mater and will work to build a culture of collaboration and partnership to deliver effective solutions and services that meet the needs and advance the aspirations of the Virginia Tech community,” said Pitt.

Pitt returns to Virginia Tech with more than 30 years of higher education experience, including in leadership positions at several other major universities. Pitt brings extensive experience in ensuring that people, technology, and services are ready to meet the academic, administrative, and research needs of a diverse research institution. She has managed multifaceted information technology environments and provided guidance to institutions preparing for the future through the development of strategic plans for information technology and information security.

As Virginia Tech addresses the ongoing challenges of information security and compliance, ever-growing infrastructure needs, and the ever-shifting balance between software toolsets and the needs of end users, Pitt will lead the Division of Information Technology with a focus on balancing the university’s priorities, building consensus, and supporting innovation and collaboration.

Pitt earned a master’s degree in architecture and bachelor’s degree in economics from Virginia Tech and a graduate certificate in higher education administration from George Mason University. Most recently, she served as CIO of Brown University in Providence, RI.

Active in numerous professional committee and associations, Sharon currently serves as board chair of EDUCAUSE, on Internet2's Community Engagement advisory group, and on the board of NYSERNet (New York State Education and Research Network). She is a past chair of EDUCAUSE’s Higher Education Information Security Council (HEISC).
