Virginia Tech’s IT Strategic Plan will present a framework for prioritization and alignment with the university’s strategic goals. Sponsored by the Office of the Vice President for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer in cooperation with the IT Governance Executive Committee, this plan aims to enable institutional priorities and enhance collaboration among IT groups.

With extensive stakeholder involvement, the plan will develop a universitywide technology roadmap that integrates outcomes to meet the continuing and emerging technology needs of the university. It outlines quick wins and sets short, medium, and long-term priorities to ensure continuous progress and adaptability.

Planning Overview

The plan will cover a four-year window, with more detailed information included for the first 18 – 24 months. The framework will be revisited and updated every 12 – 18 months to adjust for both accomplishments over the last period and new and emerging technologies that have arisen since the last update.

During the initial plan development, conversations with an extensive group of stakeholders across the institution resulted in the development of six focus areas:

  • IT organizational capabilities,
  • IT services,
  • Data and analytics,
  • Research IT,
  • Teaching and learning technologies, and
  • Administrative IT.

These focus areas will be used to structure specific conversations and to integrate four catalysts

  • IT security,
  • Artificial Intelligence,
  • IT infrastructure, and
  • User experience management.

Working groups developed around those six areas will meet to propose action plans that consider the four catalysts as well as area-specific information to incorporate into the strategic plan. Another small working group will take the information from the focus area groups and develop a written strategic plan that can be shared with the university community and with the Commonwealth, while also creating a framework for ongoing action and revision as plans are carried out.
