Information for Retirees
Microsoft storage changes for new and recent retirees
IMPORTANT: The information on this page pertains to those who retired on or after June 2, 2023 and thus receive Microsoft 365 (M365) services as a retiree benefit. If you retired on or before June 1, 2023, please refer to the article Understanding Retirees' Google Workspace Services for information about email and storage services provided to you by Virginia Tech.
What is changing in the Microsoft 365 environment for retirees?
- Retirees will retain access to M365 Online services through Virginia Tech and retain access to a Google Drive with no storage upon retirement. See a full list of apps and services.
- Starting on June 2, 2025, retirees will have a storage cap of 5 gigabytes (GB) in Exchange Online, and 5 GB to use in OneDrive.
- Effective Aug. 16, 2024, retirees may no longer create new M365 shared resources (SharePoint sites, Teams sites, Groups, Viva Engage communities). Retirees may be added to these spaces by an owner.
- Retiree-owned shared resources in M365 will need to be claimed by a department by June 30, 2025 to remain active. Unclaimed shared resources are now read-only, and access will be removed starting June 30, 2025.
