NI&S keeps Hokies connected
Over the last six years, Network Infrastructure and Services (NI&S) has dedicated efforts to a lifecycle management program, seamlessly replacing network infrastructure before it becomes obsolete. The program incorporates scheduled reinvestment for over 8000 wireless access points, 2000 Ethernet switches, and the core network infrastructure, aligning with the anticipated useful life of the asset.
Prior to the establishment of the program, there was no formal approach to fund reinvestment in Virginia Tech’s network. Years of underinvestment led to the need to identify funding for a multiyear, multimillion-dollar project to modernize the technology infrastructure that supports the university's instructional, research, and administrative activities. With help from the Office of Budget and Financial Planning, NI&S established a lifecycle management program, designed to minimize the risk of accumulating large amounts of technical debt through regular annual investments in network infrastructure.
In 2023, NI&S replaced 1,284 wireless access points and 75 Ethernet switches at the cost of $1,483,800.
“As the size, complexity, and dependency on the university's network continues to grow, the lifecycle management program will play an important role in helping NI&S to deliver network services that enable the university to fulfill its mission and pursue its vision for the future,” said Joe Hutson, deputy executive director for Network Infrastructure Services.
Thanks to the lifecycle management program, Virginia Tech’s students, faculty, staff, and guests have continued access to robust and reliable network services.
