Associate Vice President of Research Computing Terry Herdman retires, honored with emeritus status
Terry Herdman, professor of mathematics, co-founder and director of the Interdisciplinary Center for Applied Mathematics (ICAM), and Virginia Tech's first associate vice president for research computing, retired on September 9, 2022 after 48 years of service to the university.
He was appointed associate vice president for research computing and leader of Virginia Tech's then-new Advanced Research Computing (ARC) unit within the Division of IT in 2005. He served in the role for 17 years. Under Herdman’s leadership, ARC greatly expanded the university’s research computing capabilities, establishing its first centralized resource for high-performance computing systems and services. In addition, ARC provides an expert team of computational scientists who consult with faculty and students utilizing high-performance computing in their research.
Over his career, Herdman played a central role in developing Virginia Tech’s strength in applied mathematics and built relationships with top research institutes across the globe. Since its inception, ICAM has managed more than $60 million in external research funding and has had a presence in at least 32 states and 14 countries.
In November of 2022, Herdman was honored with emeritus status. The emeritus distinction is reserved for retired professors and administrators in recognition of exemplary service to the university. These individuals are specially recommended by Virginia Tech President Tim Sands and confirmed by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.
